Skiing

Get ready for an unforgettable skiing experience, climb into the chairlifts and head up Mt. Mansfield – Vermont’s highest peak. You gaze uphill as the chair accelerates up the forested slopes, passing over frozen brooks and snow-laden glades – this place is unlike anywhere else. You look back over your shoulder at the valleys and ridges, farm fields, and woodlots, unfolding as far as the eye can see. It’s moments to the top. Adjust your goggles, and check your poles, for a brief moment, you’re on top of the world. You are skiing Stowe!

Stowe History

Although Stowe was chartered as a town in 1763, Stowe’s first settlers did not arrive until 30 years later in 1793. By the dawn of the 19th century, most of Stowe’s land had been sold, and the population had grown to 316. Today, Stowe is Vermont’s largest town in land area with over 50,000 acres and a permanent population of over 4,000. Vermont’s highest peak, Mt. The Stowe Recreational Path

The Stowe Recreation Path attracts national visitors who enjoy all the historic Stowe Village has to offer. The Stowe Bike Path offers spectacular views of the Green Mountain scenery and safe pedestrian access to Stowe Village merchants. The Stowe Recreation Path winds about 5.5 miles, one-way, from north to south in and around the historic Stowe Village. Users can use it for walking, hiking, biking, running, rollerblading, and cross-country skiing (in the winter). There’s actually a separate walking/jogging path that is a bit off this beaten trail that’s safer for runners. The path starts off near the entrance to the village and runs parallel to Mountain Road for a bit before leading to a bridge that runs over the West Branch River.

Stowe Area Hikes

Stowe provides phenomenal options for hiking and exploring, from alpine ascents of Mt. Mansfield (Vermont’s highest peak) to a well-maintained network of nature trails. Enjoy the views from the Pinnacle Trail, follow the Long Trail (the inspiration for the famous Vermont beer), or wander the tranquil paradise of Wiessner Woods.  Moss Falls in another beautiful spot to visit – and it’s only a short walk to the falls. Use caution with small children – there are some steep drop-offs just off the trail. Be sure to wear durable footwear, pack hearty foods, and bring plenty of water!

Most Stowe stores offer free parking and you’ll always find a smile waiting for you inside the store. From one-of-a-kind art stores, and jewelry makers to world-famous crafts, furniture, and Vermont specialty food manufacturers – Stowe is a fun, entertaining, and delightful town to shop in. Most of the local stores are located on the Mountain Road (VT Route 107) or in downtown Stowe or along (or just off) Route 100.
